Towards a new digital order?

Workshop 3
Internet, neutral territory or controlled market?
Music content and bandwidth control
Contrary to a romantic vision of the Internet as a place where freedom reigns, the Net can and in fact already is a place subject to various methods of differentiation, segmentation, and even segregation. For instance, ISPs have technology that allows them to manage their bandwidth in order to filter, or even block, certain content. Some see this as a possible way of controlling illegal file-sharing, and are already dreaming of regulation… Would this be a threat to the free circulation of content on the World Wide Web? This angers many people who argue in favour of “net neutrality”, as it is called. But can and should the Internet really be neutral?

Beyond recordings: new avenues for labels
It is no longer enough for labels to do what they’ve always done in the past: sell sound recordings. They have to reinvent themselves by finding new business models. Easier said than done! This workshop will explore the most promising avenues: creation of new album life cycles, implementation of 360° contracts, negotiation of artist-centred brand partnerships, development of integrated music companies and meta-labels… Take a guided tour of these new practices with some eminent lawyers who are really in the know.
